The current mail debacle in the United States has exposed just how deep corruption runs in this administration and how little the government cares. The current postmaster Louis DeJoy that was confirmed by the Republican dominated congress does not have any experience with managing mail services and not a single Republican in congress seemed to care. The democratic heads in congress are only taking action right before the election when it is seemingly too late. The fact that Louis Dejoy has even kept his job for this long is revealing of the state of government oversight.
Louis DeJoy is a figure that has generated a large amount of controversy in recent weeks due to his actions as the US Postmaster. First, Dejoy has personally invested in Amazon stocks which is a direct competitor to the USPS. Second, under DeJoy mail sorting machines and mailboxes have been systematically removed across multiple states. Finally, the USPS has seen an unprecedented spike in delays across the country conveniently right before a national election.
The alarming nature of this discovery is the fact that the government on both sides of the aisle has done absolutely nothing to investigate or stop this debacle until a month before the election. Voting by mail is at an all time high and the sabotaging of the USPS has gone blind for months which has led to massive issues across the country. The legitimacy of the US elections is effectively up in the air in the month prior to a national election. This mail debacle is not just a scandal but a direct threat to the legitimacy of the US’ entire electoral system.
This election could easily be a complete sham and that would not surprise many Americans.
I highly doubt that many individuals in the United States would willingly put their trust in government given the events in recent years. Almost all aspects of our republic have been revealed to be corrupt or grossly inefficient. The Trump administration has made any faith in governmental legitimacy disappear for both sides of the aisle and this is not healthy for the future of America.
The results of the 2020 election will be declared a sham by either Democrats or Republicans and the following events will most likely create more chaos. The post 2020 election presidency must work to rebuild trust with many Americans or else the chaos that has consumed 2020 will most likely come roaring back. The 2020 election will decide not just the presidency going forward, but also decide the legitimacy of American government for years to come.
